Friendly fraud and the returns desk
Friendly fraud sounds softer than it is. The package arrived, the item was kept, and the dispute or false claim says otherwise. It lands on the returns desk as a chargeback, a missing item claim, or an empty box.
What makes friendly fraud hard is that the customer relationship is real. These are not stolen cards. They are your actual customers, which makes teams hesitant to push back even when the evidence is strong.
The defense is documentation per customer. Delivery confirmation, order history, return history, prior claims: when a second not-received claim arrives from a customer with a pattern, the response writes itself.
Scoring returns and claims together matters because friendly fraud rarely stays in one lane. The customer with three empty-box returns often has a chargeback habit too, and seeing the whole picture is what turns a awkward dispute into a clean decision.
